Learn more about passivation

Passivation is a treatment used when there are special requirements for the aluminum's corrosion resistance and electrical conductivity.

Further information

Passivation is most often used to protect aluminum blanks from corrosion and to give the blanks properties such as electrical resistance and increased adhesion.

These treatments are very thin and are not part of the aluminum substrate in the same way as e.g. anodizing is. Due to its advantages, the treatment is used, among other things, for aerospace and aviation.

Passivation is a technical treatment that protects the substrate against corrosion. Passivation has the advantage that the aluminum retains its electrical conductivity and allows for the application of various types of varnish and paint after treatment.

The increased adhesion makes passivation an absolutely fantastic pre-treatment for many types of varnish and paint. In this way, a better bond can be ensured when you want to protect further against corrosion. The increased bond is directly counteracting what is known as filiform corrosion, where it is a matter of penetration between a possible varnish or paint and the aluminium. Filiform corrosion can be seen as visible markings that roughly resemble a smaller network of branches.

Yellow chromating is a chromium(VI)-containing chromating layer for aluminum components – also known under the trade name Alodine or Iridite. The yellow chromating process is a chemical surface treatment that preserves and adds technical properties to the surface. Yellow chromating is a passivation method that uses hexavalent chromium to give the aluminum certain technical properties in terms of conductivity, corrosion protection and adhesion.
As the name suggests, yellow-chromated objects get a yellow/golden glow after treatment.

Cr+6

SurTec 650 TCP (trivalent chromium passivation) was developed by Naviair in collaboration with the US Defense Force. SurTec 650 TCP is an alternative to the chromium(VI)-containing chromating of aluminum components and is a passivation method using Trivalent Chromium. SurTec 650 TCP adds new chemical and technical properties to the surface, and exists as an alternative to hexavalent chromium treatments. SurTec 650 TCP takes on a blue-green iridescent sheen, but appears very transparent.

Cr+3 (ChromitAL TCP)

HAI® TCP complies with the requirements of MIL-DTL-5541, Type II/ Class 1A and 3

Cr+6 and Cr+3 are so-called conversion coatings, as they both change the properties of the aluminium.

Yellow Chromation is a passivation method that uses Hexavalent chromium to give the aluminum certain technical properties in terms of conductivity, corrosion protection and adhesion.

This is referred to as a conversion coating, because the surface treatment changes the original properties of the aluminum.

Yellow chromated objects get, as the name suggests, a yellow/golden glow after treatment.

Blowing is an effective mechanical pre-treatment that is used when there are special requirements for the aluminum's structure or hardness. Blasting leaves a nice, uniform and matte surface at the same time, the treatment can to a certain extent remedy machining surfaces, grinding marks, tensile and heat streaks, which are visible on the raw material. This is due to changes in the material structure, which achieves the more uniform surface and with a matte appearance before further processing.

HAI offers several different blowing media with different roughness in the structure to give the uniform surface a broken structure.

We have different variants of blowing agents, where depending on the desired result, you can choose between; glass beads, precious corundum, stainless steel balls, stainless steel grit and mixed blasting agent.

We have a blowing agent that suits your needs regardless of the application or the physical characteristics of the component.

The treatment takes place in a closed cabin, where our operators blow fine grains of glass against the aluminum blanks. This achieves a uniform surface and a nice finish on the entire item.

Blowing is a pre-treatment process that can be equated with other mechanical pre-treatments such as grinding, brushing and polishing.

HAI can blow glass profiles up to 8 meters in a continuous plant and offers economically advantageous glass blowing in fully automatic plants.
